Industry Values

employer_industries on People Search DB and industries on Company Search DB both take the names on this page. Pass one of them — not a spelling variant, and not a list of variants.

Four things to know first

Case and punctuation do not matter. Wine & Spirits, wine and spirits and WINE AND SPIRITS are one value. So are / versus a space, and an Oxford comma. One name finds every spelling of the industry. LinkedIn renamed 95 industries in its 2022 taxonomy migration, and company pages carry both vintages — so Software Development also matches the 2,246,742 occurrences filed as computer software. The Also matches column below is what each name already covers. You never need to pass the alternates, and passing them changes nothing. A partial word widens rather than failing. Four characters or more that are not an industry but appear inside some are widened to all of them: Telecom becomes telecommunications, telecommunications carriers, satellite telecommunications and media and telecommunications. A word that would match more than 25 industries is rejected instead — at that width it is not a filter. An unknown word is a 422, never an empty result. The message names near misses. This is deliberate: a filter that matched nothing would read to you exactly like “nobody works in that industry”.
Occurrences is not a headcount. It counts how often a spelling appears across company pages and experience rows together. Use it to judge whether a filter is worth applying — not as a market size.

All 443 industries

104 of these cover more than one stored spelling. Where Also matches is empty, the name has only ever been written one way.
